2019 NRL – North Queensland Cowboys vs Canberra Raiders Preview & Prediction

THE TEAM NEWS
NORTH QUEENSLAND COWBOYS

Head Coach: Paul Green

Starting 13: Martin, Macdonald, Kahu, Hampton, Bowen, Clifford, Morgan, Scott, Granville, McLean, Cooper, Hess, McGuire – Interchanges: Asiata, Jensen, Dunn, Molo – Reserves: Wright, O’Neill, Hola, Tuala

Unavailable: Kyle Feldt, Murray Taulagi, Scott Bolton, Jason Taumalolo

North Queensland suffered a second straight defeat as their struggles continued against Cronulla last week where they were on the end of a heavy defeat following a shocking second-half.

The Cowboys went into the sheds with a four-point advantage at the break but allowed 36 second-half points as the Sharks blew them away with the Cowboys only adding six points of their own in the 16-42 loss.

Cowboys head coach Paul Green has named the same 17 as last week as he looks for a reaction from his players after their second-half capitulation but they face another tricky test against the Raiders.
CANBERRA RAIDERS

Head Coach: Ricky Stuart

Starting 13: Nicoll-Klokstad, Cotric, Croker, Leilua, Rapana, Wighton, Williams, Papalii, Hodgson, Lui, J. Bateman, Whitehead, Sutton – Interchanges: Havili, Young, Soliola, Horsburgh – Reserves: Tapine, Murchie, Simonsson, Collins

Unavailable: Michael Oldfield, Aidan Sezer

Canberra got back to winning ways after Melbourne showed their class in the previous week, with the Raiders doing enough to see off Newcastle in a closely-fought contest, and now travel to North Queensland hoping to make it back-to-back wins.

Ricky Stuart has stuck with the same side that defeated the Knights which means John Bateman will continue in the second-row rather than lock, with that position occupied by Ryan Sutton.

Aidan Sezer is expected back for next week’s game so Sam Williams will continue at halfback in his absence whilst Joseph Tapine is not far away from a return either but is expected to miss out this week.

THE PREDICTION

North Queensland’s issues were laid bare in a shocking second-half against Cronulla last week and Canberra will be looking to capitalise. They have looked in good nick to start the season, with their only loss coming against Melbourne which is nothing to be embarrassed about. The Raiders look like they have the ability to score points whilst they have defended resolutely at the start of the season, and with the Cowboys still lacking fluency to their attack, Canberra can make it three wins from four.
