A player who worked for five years heavy lifting in a metal fabrication factory gets his chance to cement a spot in the glamour Sydney Roosters team in Saturday night’s Community Cup clash against Manly.
Matt Ikuvalu debuted for the Roosters at the ripe old age of 24 in the club’s premiership-winning season last year, impressing in his four games for the club.
And coach Trent Robinson has given the Central Coast battler - who often catches the train to Sydney for training from his Central Coast home - an early chance to push for a regular berth on the wing against the Sea Eagles at Central Coast Stadium.
“He’s a big strong kid who has been rewarded for his good trial form with an early crack at the top grade,” a Roosters spokesman says.
“He showed he could handle it last year and he is a lovely kid with a good story.
“A lot of young players would have given up in his circumstances but he kept plugging away, mixing sport with work and has got himself a contract.
“He is studying to be a school teacher and is very popular within the club.”
Angus Crichton will captain the Roosters in his first game for the club after his much-much-publicised off season move from Souths.
