2019 NRL – Melbourne Storm vs Brisbane Broncos Preview & Prediction

THE TEAM NEWS

MELBOURNE STORM

Head Coach: Craig Bellamy

Starting 13: Hughes, Vunivalu, Chambers, Scott, Addo-Carr, Munster, Croft, J. Bromwich, C. Smith, Asofa-Solomona, F. Kaufusi, K. Bromwich, Finucane – Interchanges: B. Smith, Welch, Kamikamica, P. Kaufusi – Reserves: Papenhuyzen, Eisenhuth, Walters, Seve

Unavailable: Scott Drinkwater, Joe Stimson

Melbourne will be looking to go one better this year after they suffered disappointment in last season's NRL Grand Final with the Sydney Roosters outclassing them in a one-sided affair.

The Storm finally came to an agreement with skipper Cameron Smith to extend his career into this season but it will be their first year without fullback Billy Slater as he decided to hang up his boots.

Scott Drinkwater was all set for the first crack at filling the spot Slater had left in the fullback position but he picked up a nasty pectoral injury that will keep him sidelined until Round 14 with Jahrome Hughes named in the  jersey for the season-opener.

BRISBANE BRONCOS

Head Coach: Anthony Seibold

Starting 13: Boyd, Oates, Roberts, Bird, Isaako, Milford, Nikorima, Lodge, McCullough, Ofahengaue, Glenn, Su’A, Gillett – Interchanges: Staggs, Fifita, Flegler, Pangai Jnr. – Reserves: Fensom, Carrigan, O’Sullivan, Shibasaki

Unavailable: Payne Haas

Brisbane Broncos suffered a drawn out coaching saga over the off-season with a bitter divorce with former head coach Wayne Bennett finally paving the way for Anthony Seibold to take over.
The former Rabbitohs head coach will take control of this young Broncos side having shed some of their experienced players during the off-season as they turn to their impressive rookies for an assault on the NRL crown.

Matt Gillett makes a welcome return for the Broncos having missed most of last year with a serious neck injury with the back-rower listed to start at lock in a surprise switch from the edge.

THE PREDICTION

Melbourne will enter a new era without Billy Slater with Craig Bellamy facing one of his toughest tasks yet as he looks to guide his Storm side to the finals. He will face-off against new Brisbane head coach Anthony Seibold, who worked under Bellamy at the Storm, in what should be a corking opening contest. The Broncos have a very young side with some real prospects coming through their system and they can highlight their Premiership credentials by laying down a marker with a win at AAMI Park.
